Commercial Activity

The Moredun strain of Cryptosporidium parvum was originally from the gastrointestinal contents of a dead red deer calf (Cervus elaphus) sourced from the Glen Saugh experimental deer farm in 1987.

It has since been maintained by serial passage in either bovine calves or lambs at approximately 3 monthly intervals at Moredun Research Institute, initially by Institute research staff and subsequently by Moredun Scientific Ltd from 1995-2006. Moredun research Institute staff continued passage through 2007 and then production was moved to Creative Science Company, a spin out from Moredun Research Institute, established by key Institute staff. 

Creative Science Company currently supplies live or inactivated Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts (Moredun isolate) for water companies, regulatory authorities and researchers as control standard of known provenance.
